5. K'gari (Fraser Island)
Starting off in sunny Queensland, K'gari is an island paradise close to Harvey Bay and is infamous for its beautiful beach 4x4ing.
The Northern Forest and Lake Garawongera Scenic Drive is a 71km route, passing through rainforest and eucalytpus forests, and by sand-blows and freshwater lakes. Accessed Dilli Village, Eurong, Cornwells Road and Happy Valley, the 95km Eastern Beach is the main "highway" of K'gari, and a great way to see many of the main attractions on the island.
Make sure you're checking your tyre pressure for all the sand driving with the TuffAnt TPMS!
4. High Country
The Australian High Country has a range of stunning mountain drives in both NSW and Victoria. Zeka Spur (193km) runs from Dargo to Licola and is mostly medium grade with short difficult sections. Other notable tracks in the high country include the Blue Rag Range Track, Mount Pinnibar, and the Inngeegoodbee Track.
To protect your vehicle from rocks along the way, check out our Underbody Armour.
3. Gibbs River Road
Stretching between Derby and Kununurra, the 660km Gibbs River Road is a mixture of dirt and gravel and features the famous and well-photographed Pentecost River crossing. The Gibb River Road is only accessible during the dry season (May to October). During the wet season (November to April), heavy rains can make the road impassable due to flooding.
One of the highlights of this 4x4 experience is the opportunity to learn more about the rich Aboriginal cultural heritage of the area.
2. Simpson Desert
Made up of 1100 parallel sand dunes, the Simpson Desert is the 4th largest desert in Australia. The tallest dune is 40m tall!
The French Line and the QAA Line are both the shortest and most popular ways of crossing the Simpson Desert. There are a number of large dunes to cross and these climbs can become degraded.
On the other end of the scale, the most remote route option is the Madigan Line, which links the Hay River Track and the Colson Track in the east.
1. Cape York
Any 4x4 enthusiast would put the Telegraph Track at Cape York first on any list of off-roading routes in Australia!
The Old Telegraph Track's track demands the most from four-wheel drivers, especially its array of water crossings, including the notorious Palm Creek, Gunshot Creek and Nolan’s Brook.
Tackle this track between June and October, and beware that track conditions can change very quickly! Graded difficult, allow two days to complete the route.
